The elephant in the room

It was supposed to be a simple dinner party with a group of friends, but as soon as Sarah arrived with an actual elephant, nobody could ignore the elephant in the room anymore. But out of courtesy, the guests tried to act as if everything was normal.

At first, the elephant didn’t seem to be causing too much trouble. It stood quietly in the corner, as Sarah introduced it to her guests. Everyone tried to make polite conversation, as if an elephant at a dinner party was a perfectly normal occurrence.

But soon enough, the elephant’s presence began to cause problems. It was too big for the small apartment, knocking over delicate porcelain items as it moved around the room. The guests started to feel increasingly uncomfortable, but nobody wanted to say anything to Sarah.

Finally, as the elephant made its way through the crowded apartment, it let out a deafening trumpet followed by an earth-shattering fart, causing the guests to recoil in shock and disgust.

“One of us has to say something,” one of the guests finally spoke up. “This is getting out of hand. We can’t just pretend like there isn’t an elephant in the room.” The other guests nodded in agreement.

Sarah looked embarrassed, but she knew that they were right. She led the elephant out of the apartment, apologizing to her guests as she went. Once the elephant was gone, the tension in the room dissipated.

The guests were relieved to be rid of the massive animal and resumed their dinner party, as if nothing out of the ordinary had occurred. But the memory of the elephant lingered literally in the air, unspoken and surreal.

Sarah had left in a dramatic fashion, leading the elephant down the stairs and out onto the street. The other guests watched from the apartment window as she disappeared into the night, the elephant trumpeting in the distance.

They never spoke of the elephant again, but the memory of that strange and surreal evening stayed with them forever.
